The Efficacy of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy followed by Radical Hysterectomy for Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Uterine Cervix

Abstract

|
Two courses of chemotherapy containing cisplatin, mitomycin and bleomycin as a neoadjuvant treatment was given twenty seven patients with previously untreated bulky(designated as¡Ã3cm size) FIGO stage I b-IIa squamous cell carcinoma of uterine
cervix
and followed by radical surgery.
After chemotherapy responses were detected in 19 patients(6 complate and 13 partial : overall 70.4%).
Surgery consisted of radical hysteretomy plus bilateral lymphadenectomy.
Surgery was performed without significant difficulty.
At histologic examination, complete responses were found in 2(7.4%0 and partial responses in 17(63.0%) cases.
Only one patients had lymph node metastasis(3.8%) and received postoperative radiation therapy. A lower than expected incidence of lymph node metastasis after chemotherapy was detected.
A chemotherapy induced toxicity was mainly represented by nausea and vomiting. There was no grade 4 toxicity noted. Chemotherapy did not increased surgery related complication. Twenty four months median following time has been reached and four
recurrences have been detected so far.
